Adding music to your home is fast becoming a mine field, with many manufacturers now getting involved as it's popularity increases. Multi room audio doesn't have to be complicated though!

Essentially you have two types of consumer level multi room audio, true multi room audio and speaker distribution. With the true multi room audio you also have another choice... ceiling speakers or freestanding all-in-one wifi speakers? Your choice here will determine your future options too so choose carefully!

Multi Room Audio System

One amplifier per room, this means you can play different music in different rooms at the same time. So you can be in the kitchen listening to the radio whilst your partner is in the lounge listening to Spotify etc.. With a couple of button presses you can sync zones so selected rooms are all playing the same music at the same time. Perfect for parties!

True multi room audio systems are a bit more flexible than speaker distribution, with fully independent volume controls per zone and with the ability to be used seperately. These come at a premium though with Sonos Connect AMP systems costing a minimum of £600 per room.

You can easily add another room with a freestanding speaker which is a big bonus. Add rooms as you go along....

Pros: Flexible, Ease Of Use, Best Sound Quality, Easy Future Expansion

Cons: Expensive, Some Systems Can't Play YouTube, Friends Must Have App To Use System

Speaker Distribution

One amplifier, one music source with speakers in multiple rooms. Each room can be turned on and off independently from the central amplifier. Optional volume controls allow you to turn rooms off or adjust the volume down locally. Much cheaper than a multi room audio system as long as you don't want to play different music in different rooms at the same time.

These systems are generally cheaper than one zone of a true multi room audio system, so whilst they do have some restrictions the cost savings may just make up for it!

As this all wires back to one amplifier you have to cater for each room at wiring stage, there are no wireless all-in-one speaker options here!

Pros: Cheap, Simple, Your choice of music streamer connected to amplifier.

Cons: Can't play different music in different rooms at the same time, local volume control is limited (can only turn down from amplifiers settings), central location for music may present control issues, have to turn the amp on before you use it.

So as you can see, there are a few ways of doing this, we've rounded them down into the relevant categories and tried to add as much information as possible, if you need any help deciding on a suitable system please feel free to call us on 02392 006118 and we'll be happy to specify for you.
